What is WebChamp and Why we make it?

The Kisai x Sorajima Southeast Asia Webtoon Championship 2024 is a collaboration between Kisai and Sorajima, one of the leading webtoon publishers in Japan. For the first time, a comic competition is open exclusively to Southeast Asian creators, aiming to support and discover the best talent from the region.

This competition invites creators across Southeast Asia to submit their best one-shot comics in their language. The winning entries will be translated into Japanese and released in Japan on Sorajima’s platform, granting creators an incredible opportunity to reach a wider audience.

general requirements

The theme is not specifically determined as long as the main theme is related to the action genre. Suggested themes for participants include:

  • “Interwoven Fates”
  • “Echo of the Past”
  • “Trial of the Heart”

Allowed Content

  • Stories should be appropriate for readers aged 16 and older.
  • Webtoon content may include moderate violence, mild language, mild sexual content without explicit depictions, mild nudity, and portrayals of alcohol or drug use. Topics such as bullying, self-harm, and abuse or torture may also be included.
  • Content may be in English or in a language associated with Southeast Asian countries.

Story Content

  • The theme must be the main focus of the story.
  • The main character must have strong goals/motivations.
  • The story must contain significant action scenes, in terms of scene impact rather than panel count.
  • The world background (worldbuilding) should include fantasy elements—modern settings with added fantasy elements are allowed.
  • The story should leave a “complete” impression but with the possibility for a longer continuation.

Illustration Content

  • There is no restriction on the style used for webtoon illustrations.
  • There is no restriction on the software used to create illustrations.
  • Using image-generating machines, such as but not limited to Midjourney, Nijijourney, and others, is prohibited.
  • The work must be fully colored, finished, and include speech bubbles, dialogue, and sound effects.

Format Guidelines

  • Panel Count: The webtoon must have at least 40 panels and a maximum of 120 panels.
  • File Format: The work must be submitted in JPEG format with a minimum resolution of 350 DPI.
  • Page/Canvas Size: The canvas width must be 720 pixels, in a scrollable (vertical scroll) format suitable for online webtoon platforms.
  • Script: A script in DOC or RTF format must be submitted, containing dialogues, sound effects, and all text in the Webtoon, with indicators for each panel. The script format is flexible as long as it meets the requirements.
  • Webtoon Page Slicing: Since the webtoon format is vertically long, submissions can be split into multiple pages and different JPEG files, provided that:
    • Each page must have at least 5 panels.
    • Panels, dialogues, or important elements should not be cut in half.
